Thanksgiving 2012: 3 Things You Should Be Thankful For About Your Current Work

What are you thankful for? With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’m pretty sure most of us are already thinking of the great blessings we received over the year. Human resource books surely contain tons of technical skill and lessons that we could be thankful for. But for this post, I invite you to take some time and begin to appreciate the little things about your current career.

be thankful

I hope that more human resource management journal would join me in taking a look at careers in a different light. I believe that jobs are more than just performing what has to be done – working is sharing your work and your life’s passions. For this Thanksgiving, I am very thankful to have been cultivating a career that allows me to do what I love while allowing me to bring food on the table. It is also my wish for all of you to find this fulfillment in your respective careers. To be able to do so, here are 3 little things that could help you appreciate the job you currently have.

You have a source of income

The economy has been down for a quite some time now. Though we are making progress in terms of getting it back on track and creating jobs, there are still a lot of things to be done before the economy returns to its once perfect shape. Unemployment is our reality. Thousands of people today are either underemployed or unemployed.

Whether you are working for a small business or a part of a Fortune 500, you should know that you are blessed to be currently employed given our current economic situation. Be thankful for the opportunity to share your skills with different individuals who can help you grow personally and professionally. Becoming a part of something whether your participation is big or small surely helps you to live a life with purpose. Treasure this opportunity by performing well at work and spending your hard-earned dollars wisely.

You have a buddy in your work place

Remember your first day at work? You were the shy noob in the corner because you didn’t know anyone. After months or even years of working for the same company, you now have a couple of close friends you can hang out with for after office cocktails and weekend barbeques.

Your workplace is now much more tolerable with your office buddies around. Never forget how you started without anyone to talk to in your current place of work. And no matter how much you say that you don’t need anybody – you do. People are sociable by nature and it’s great to have a friend or two who you can talk to when things aren’t going pretty well in the office. Be thankful for these individuals and the friendship they offer you. Show them your appreciation by returning the favor and being a good friend to them as well.

Your boss treats you alright

Bosses sent from heaven are like unicorns – they are rare and we don’t even know if they exist. But kidding aside, it is very difficult to find a workplace superior that you’ll love entirely because all of us are just humans. We all have anger outburst and make bad decisions from time to time. But as long as your boss treats you with dignity and respect, that is another thing that you should be thankful for. Remember that it’s very easy to be mean and unfair. However, it takes a bit more effort to treat others right – so give your boss some credit. Don’t forget that somewhere, somehow, someone has it more difficult than you. Learn to work well with your boss and colleagues to continue on the good professional relationship with your office.

BOTTOMLINE: Don’t wait for Thanksgiving each year to start appreciating what you have. Each day that you are alive to see all of these graces in your career, give thanks and work on enriching them to help not yourself and your family but the organization you are working for as well. Your life is full of blessing every day. It is up to you to take time and appreciate all of these wonders. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!
