Lessons From The iPad Mini: Personal Branding And Coming In As The Best Surprise In Your Work Place

And Apple did it again. Many were surely caught by surprise with the giant company’s announcement of the iPad mini. I know I was. iPad mini is like the unexpected game changer in the 7-inch tablet arena that’s been bloody battle ground in the past few months between Samsung tablets, the Kindle and other handheld devices in that category.

This new release made me think of another battleground that is the work place. And we can surely pick a thing or two that’s yet to be extensively written in human resource books.

iPad Mini

Apple is a very exceptional brand. And the release of the iPad mini can surely teach us a couple of things about coming into the marketplace (or in the workplace) as a surprise. Take it from the iPad mini. Here's how you can also create an iconic brand in the workplace:

1. Authenticity is the secret ingredient

Show sincerity and don’t just start impressing your boss because of the possibility of getting a salary increase or a promotion. More often than not, these rewards are difficult to come by. And having such a skin deep objective for a task that would entail so much from you will only get you tired in no time. It may even leave you frustrated for not achieving your goal of getting rising up the ranks or getting a fatter paycheck.

2. Take advantage of technology

Be on the look out for methods that the company can apply to be more efficient in doing tasks. Whether it’s the latest productivity software or simply starting an online community where you and your colleagues can collaborate, keep your suggestions coming. Just make sure that they’re relevant and can truly make a difference. There’s nothing more than any entrepreneur could want other than to grow their business and cut on expenses.

3. Do ordinary things in extraordinary ways

I bet every one of your colleagues goes to the office on a work day – but not all of them go early enough or at least on time with a smile on their face. These are just two of the small things that you can do to create your own mark. The great news is, there are thousands of little things that you can improve on to be noticed. Just remember that being consistent is important to make others notice your effort.

4. Be an expert

Contrary to popular belief, being a Jack (or Jill) of all trades will do little for your career. Business owners, hiring managers and headhunters would usually prefer an individual who has polished skills for a certain type of work. Going round and round all over the place is not the best route to the top. Aside from getting years of experience in a field of work, certifications and a post graduate degree would help you seal the deal. Being formally trained in a special area of marketing or accounting would also help in making you the go-to person for that topic.

5. Get a rock star status

Who wouldn't want to be associated with a rock star right? Give your employer that crazy opportunity to have an industry celebrity within the company. One of the most common mistakes made by employees is to forego the creation of their personal brand within the industry. Being invited to be a resource speaker is not only for solo-entrepreneurship or professionals who have established themselves in the industry. You can begin making a name for yourself by joining and being active in industry organizations. In keeping up with the digital age, you can also leverage on the internet to demonstrate your expertise in the field and create your personal voice. Blogging and making your presence felt in social media platforms are great for this job.

Have you been a fly on the office wall? Quit being a second rate employee and start turning heads and commanding respect like the iPad mini. Tell me how you've become a one-of-a-kind employee by leaving a comment below.

Thanksgiving 2012: 3 Things You Should Be Thankful For About Your Current Work

What are you thankful for? With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’m pretty sure most of us are already thinking of the great blessings we received over the year. Human resource books surely contain tons of technical skill and lessons that we could be thankful for. But for this post, I invite you to take some time and begin to appreciate the little things about your current career.

be thankful

I hope that more human resource management journal would join me in taking a look at careers in a different light. I believe that jobs are more than just performing what has to be done – working is sharing your work and your life’s passions. For this Thanksgiving, I am very thankful to have been cultivating a career that allows me to do what I love while allowing me to bring food on the table. It is also my wish for all of you to find this fulfillment in your respective careers. To be able to do so, here are 3 little things that could help you appreciate the job you currently have.

You have a source of income

The economy has been down for a quite some time now. Though we are making progress in terms of getting it back on track and creating jobs, there are still a lot of things to be done before the economy returns to its once perfect shape. Unemployment is our reality. Thousands of people today are either underemployed or unemployed.

Whether you are working for a small business or a part of a Fortune 500, you should know that you are blessed to be currently employed given our current economic situation. Be thankful for the opportunity to share your skills with different individuals who can help you grow personally and professionally. Becoming a part of something whether your participation is big or small surely helps you to live a life with purpose. Treasure this opportunity by performing well at work and spending your hard-earned dollars wisely.

You have a buddy in your work place

Remember your first day at work? You were the shy noob in the corner because you didn’t know anyone. After months or even years of working for the same company, you now have a couple of close friends you can hang out with for after office cocktails and weekend barbeques.

Your workplace is now much more tolerable with your office buddies around. Never forget how you started without anyone to talk to in your current place of work. And no matter how much you say that you don’t need anybody – you do. People are sociable by nature and it’s great to have a friend or two who you can talk to when things aren’t going pretty well in the office. Be thankful for these individuals and the friendship they offer you. Show them your appreciation by returning the favor and being a good friend to them as well.

Your boss treats you alright

Bosses sent from heaven are like unicorns – they are rare and we don’t even know if they exist. But kidding aside, it is very difficult to find a workplace superior that you’ll love entirely because all of us are just humans. We all have anger outburst and make bad decisions from time to time. But as long as your boss treats you with dignity and respect, that is another thing that you should be thankful for. Remember that it’s very easy to be mean and unfair. However, it takes a bit more effort to treat others right – so give your boss some credit. Don’t forget that somewhere, somehow, someone has it more difficult than you. Learn to work well with your boss and colleagues to continue on the good professional relationship with your office.

BOTTOMLINE: Don’t wait for Thanksgiving each year to start appreciating what you have. Each day that you are alive to see all of these graces in your career, give thanks and work on enriching them to help not yourself and your family but the organization you are working for as well. Your life is full of blessing every day. It is up to you to take time and appreciate all of these wonders. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanksgiving Holiday: 7 + 1 Simple Ideas That Would Help You Recharge from a Week’s Worth of Work

Human resource books are awesome guides in helping anyone at the workplace. But there are only a handful that mentions about how you can make your career feel like new week after week. Have you got any information from them?

happy thanksgiving

If you can’t the answer from human resource books online, this could be your lucky day. Below, I listed down 7 useful tips on how you can recharge this Thanksgiving. But these tips can be used all year round. You don’t need a special holiday to spice up your professional career and show love for yourself.
Take one of the 7 or perform all of these tips to feel refreshed when you get back to work.

1. Wake up late – without a hangover. Partying on a Friday night with your colleagues might sound like a great idea for rewarding yourself. But staying up late and taking in all that booze isn’t good for your skin, more so for your health. Rest your tired body from a week’s worth of work by having 8 or more hours of sleep.

2. Prepare breakfast. During the work week, I’m pretty sure you just grab a sandwich and coffee to go on your way to work. Cut all the rush of the holiday weekend by taking the time to fry a couple of eggs, make some toasts and toss a salad. Being able to squeeze a glass of fresh fruit juice would make things even better.

3. Go out on a date with your partner, family or friends. Weekends are surely the perfect time to reconnect and strengthen your relationships. Make an effort to spend much time with the people who matter most to you during the holidays. Spending time together doesn't have to be expensive. You can choose to stay at home and do things together or plan out an adventure packed day in your city. Be creative in coming up with an activity or a set of it that will be enjoyed by everyone involved.

4. Take a stroll in the park. Getting to work early and leaving late at night can make you miss out on the beauty of the scenery that you pass by. Especially if you have a lot of concerns for that day. Being locked up in an air conditioned room for more than 8 hours a day might not be very good for your health. When you have time, make it a point to walk around and breathe in natural air not generated by room cooling machines. Take the time to appreciate the scene and the greenery to help recharge your mind.

5. Take a long warm bath. What could be more relaxing than a bubble bath complete with soothing music and scented candles? You can also bring in a bottle of red wine to complete the A-list experience. Taking a little more time in the shower doesn't only help you pay more attention to your body but it also assists the creation of a hassle-free and laid-back day.

6. Cut off (or at least lessen) your connection to technology. In this day and age, this idea might sound crazy. Everyone has mobile phones and other portable gadgets that keep us connected to the rest of the world through the internet and social media sites. Though this type of technology is great for keeping us updated, checking your work email on the weekend or throughout the holiday doesn't help you recharge. Make an effort to unplug for at least an hour during the weekend to enjoy more your time away from the office.

7. Feed your creativity. You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate artworks in a museum or enjoy a theatrical presentation. Sometimes, having the need to stimulate your mind is an enough reason to take on artistic pursuits. Who cares if you don’t actually understand it? Being exposed to the arts or other things not related to your work could be useful for stimulating your mind.

The GOLDEN RULE OF RECHARGING: Consciously sit and quiet down your mind. This may sound pretty easy but it’s not. Just sitting in one corner and taking in the scene without thinking about work could be difficult. But you’ll get this eventually. Just make sure to devote some time to practice this on weekends or a couple of minutes at night before you go to bed.

Do you have tips not included in career resource books? I’d love to know all about them. Leave me a comment below to share your thoughts. May you have a relaxing Thanksgiving this year!

Successfully Negotiating a Pay Increase Is Better than Winning the World Series

One of the most awaited sporting events of the year has kicked off a couple of the days ago. With the start of this year’s World Series games, whose side are you on?

Negotiating your salary is just like baseball. Everything is fast-paced and three strikes could get you out of the game. Human resources books have wonderful insights on getting the job of your dreams and the salary you truly deserve.

But what about the changing times? You may ask. Well, that’s what the World Series is for. Here’s what the game has taught me so far about negotiating my salary:

Ready with research

Before dropping any hint that you’d want a pay increase, make sure to start gathering facts. Ask around for the standard industry rate of professionals in your industry who have the same years of experience and skills. In thinking through how much your services are worth, always factor in your certifications, post graduate education as well as the industry awards you’ve received.

Accomplishments on the bat

This is the best time for you to brag (nicely) about what you’ve accomplished throughout your career. In listing your achievements, start with the success stories you’ve created for your current employer. Make a list of previous projects and tasks that made a big impact on the company. Whether it won your current employer an award or closed a big deal under your wing, make sure to take credit for it. When the negotiations begin, this list will serve as your cheat sheet in reminding your boss of how much you're worth in the company.

“It can be done” attitude

With the current worldwide economic downturn, salary increases have moved down the priority lists of companies. But this shouldn’t rub you off staying hopeful and aiming for the salary increase that you deserve. Keeping the right frame of mind is the key to getting passed through this setback. Seeing the situation in a positive light can greatly boost morale in negotiating your salary even in these trying times. Remember to take the possibilities of failure as signs for you to take caution.

Survive through persuasive arguments – not through deception

Negotiating is the art of friendly persuasion. So in putting forward your points as to why you deserve a pay increase, always remember to bring the spotlight to your achievements and the advantages the company enjoys with having you around. Clearly state the perks in black and white to allow your current employer to see how increasing your salary can benefit the organization as a whole. Keep in mind that though you would be the one receiving a higher pay every month, your employer considers it as an investment. Let them know how investing in you can give them the extra mileage over competitors.

Expect the unexpected

If all else fails, you might want to consider other opportunities with another employer or perhaps offering your expertise as a consult to companies who might be needing assistance.

Aiming for the big salary win?

Take the first step by being bold to negotiate your salary. Let me know how strike the bat by leaving a comment below. Oh by the way, I guess all of us want to be a manager so here are some tips on Becoming a Manager if not Today Tommorow

3 Ultimate Rules In Finding And Pursuing The Right Career Goals

Human resource books are experts in helping plan out your career. But have you consulted them lately? If you don’t have enough time to go through piles of books, I’m sharing with you the 3 ultimate rules in choosing and achieving career goals.
3 Ultimate Rules In Finding And Pursuing The Right Career Goals

Career Planning Key # 1 Be specific

The first step in setting goals that you can actually achieve is to know what you’d like to attain. Writing down that you’d like a promotion or a raise is not good enough. Given that example, here are 5 smart questions that you can ask to get the ball rolling towards success at the top of the corporate ladder:
  • To what position do I want to be promoted to?
  • How will I measure my achievement?
  • What milestones can I put in place to check my progress?
  • How much time am I giving myself to reach my ideal weight?
  • How will I achieve my promotion?
  • What new skill should I learn?
  • Will I need to go back to school or get a couple of certifications?
  • Why is this goal important to me?
These basic questions will help you uncover the exact end goal that you want to achieve. Getting down to details is very important when plotting out your career. Remember that the goals remain as dreams until you write them down and identify concrete steps to be taken.

Career Planning Key # 2 Tackle your goals one step at a time in bite sizes

It is very easy to feel overwhelmed by long term goals that are grand. More often than not, these types of career goals appear unreachable because of their size and the time frame that we’ve set to reach them. Remember that leaving them to appear this way can lead you to a point of no return. Procrastination is one of the top reasons why many fail to achieve their goal. Here are 4 practical ways on how you can keep your big dreams manageable and attainable in small chunks:
  • List down concrete steps that you’d need to take in order to achieve your goal
  • If you’d need more than a year to get to your dream, develop a yearly plan that outlines which part should be accomplished in a given. Keep your milestones specific so they can also serve as your progress tracker
  • Break down your goals into phases to help you focus your efforts Create a monthly and weekly to-do list for your yearly tasks. This will ensure that you have covered your goals at the end of the year
There are tons of ways to keep your quest towards success running smoothly. Just always remember to approach your goals slowly but surely by taking one step at a time.

Career Planning Key # 3 Be ready to weather the failure storm

Having a back-up has always been a sensible decision. No matter how much you prepare or try to stick with the plan, there would always be unexpected roadblocks that can keep you from getting where you want to be. When writing down your career goals, think of a plan B or even a Plan Z just in case surprises come along the way. Make use of what you have already accomplished when you unexpectedly have to make a detour from your plans. In this way, you are sure that none of your efforts are put to waste.

Do you know where your career is heading?

Start planning your career path today. If you’ve been down the same road for a couple, it’s probably time to reevaluate your goals and make a couple of new ones to bring you higher on the corporate ladder.

Still thinking what career to pursue? Perhaps having a career change, here are some Career Jump-start Tips

3 Secrets to Setting Your Goals towards Success

Are you still thinking why you should set goals? Goal setting has been used by individuals from all walks of life to achieve their dreams. Many human resource books and professionals stress the importance of having goals in the growth of an individual. Entrepreneurs and athletes alike also make use of this motivation tool to reach not only short-term but also long term goals that align with their vision in life.
3 Secrets to Setting Your Goals towards Success

Here are more practical reasons to start setting goals today:
  • Focus your efforts on the activities that would lead towards success
  • Make the best use of your time and resources
  • Get a clear picture of where you intend to be in a given time frame
In general, goal setting can provide a solid structure for your life by leading you on a path. So, How Can You Effectively Set Goals and Successfully Achieve Them?

Goal Setting Secret # 1 Ask the “Why?”

Wanting to lose 30 pounds to fit in your old clothes might be a little too dreamy for others – but if that’s your main reason, then let it be. Knowing why you want to achieve something can really help in keeping on you track towards achieving your goal especially when the road gets rough. Make sure to be honest with yourself as to why you would like to achieve your goals. There are no right and wrong answers – just personal responses that speak to your heart.

Goal Setting Secret # 2 Own it

Setting your goals should always be a personal affair. Just like in the first secret I shared, no one else should be involved in setting and achieving your goals other than yourself. Don’t be afraid to take a bold step and set up a goal. Having your own goals is a sign of independence. It is also a great way to show how you value and love yourself. But keep in mind that owning your goals also means that you are responsible for them. So whether you achieve them or not, know that you only have yourself to blame.

Goal Setting Secret # 3 There are different types of goals

All of us surely have tons of concerns that usually revolve around our families, finances and careers. But have you thought about your life outside these fields? Do want to improve other aspects of your life including your health, attitudes as well as your artistic pursuits and hobbies? Remember that your goals should not only revolve around the common aspects of your life. To make sure that you are living in balance, examine all the areas of your life and set goals that would help you continually grow towards a life that is truly worth living.

Setting goals is difficult. And achieving them is even harder. In order to use goals as an effective motivational tool in your life, keep a positive outlook by making these goal setting secrets work to your advantage.

The Fantastic 7: Calendar Apps Recommended By Mashable

Mashable is like an online human resource book that can be accessed by anyone. On top of giving away great information, they are certainly relevant. A few days back, I came across Emily Price’s article 7 Fantastic Calendar Apps To Keep You on Schedule on Mashable. It provided a quick review and photos of applications that can save people like you and me from getting drowned in work.
Mashable
I must say, the list is very helpful. Though I've been an iPhone user for about a year now, I still have very few apps other than the basics like YouTube and Skype. I’m considering buying one of these applications to keep me organized and act as my super hero in this digital age.

Career Jump-start Tips

Know that the next few months would be the most difficult ones of your early adult life. Though human resource books always offer pleasant perspectives but it’s still a fact. Graduating from college, with or without sparkling academic honors, is just an amazing thing. After years of studying and working hard, you are finally free from all the books, exams, reports, term papers and anything that spells academic stress.

Career Jump start Tips

Feels great, right? Because it really is; and it will remain to be that way for the next few weeks or even months until it actually hits you’re an unemployed member of the working force. That is of course after realizing that you are in limbo – you’re too old to be in school but still quite inexperienced in the actual workforce. Remember that summer jobs and internships do not count as a real life work experience though they’ve earned you a couple of bucks and thought you a couple of things about the industry you wish to dominate (someday, hopefully).

This is the point where you ask: If it sounds that hopeless, what should I do? Well, just sit there and continue reading this piece. I’m going to share with you 3 helpful tips putting the post-college graduation downtime to good use.

Enjoy the moment. Nothing can be better than enjoying the fruits of your hard labor. And this is the perfect time to do that. Look back on your college days and try to get a feel of how much you’ve grown (physically, emotionally, academically, and in every other way).

Take note of the important things you’ve learned and the great people you met along the way.

Rest up. This is probably the only time in your life when being a couch potato is acceptable. Well, for the next couple of weeks or months probably. After months of rigorous academic work, followed by moving either back home or to a new city, you deserve a break. Read a book or two, watch a massive amount TV series and movies or just lay down in the park. Travelling locally or internationally would be great as well if you have the financial resources to do so.

Treat it as a summer vacation – remember, when you start working you’ll only get a few days off in a year. So make the most out of your down time by being (appropriately) wild and free as any young individual would do.

Be productive. This might seem pretty contradictory to the previous tip but it’s actually not. They even complement one another if you look at it closely. In the workforce, having long gaps between employments somewhat raises red flags. But freelancing and doing volunteer work are effective ways to combat this notion. Also, this is a great way to build a portfolio if you intend to go into graphic design, copyright and any other occupation that may need a proof of your skill level.

Simply put, just drop the plan. Getting a clear idea of what you want to do or achieve is enough to get your career rolling. Knowing where you actually want to go may be great at this point but it’s not as important – you have a couple of years to figure that out once you get a real feel of the actual working environment in your industry.

Everything changes over time; learn to embrace it to achieve success.

Personal Leadership: Best Kept Secret to L.I.V.E. Your Life to the Fullest

I didn't need a human resource book to improve my career. More so, I didn't need anyone to tell me what I want out of life. Resource books and guides are really great. But at the end of the day, everything boils down to working on achieving what I want.

Personal Leadership

Today I’ll share with you one the secrets to fuller life. Having a strong personal leadership capability can certainly bring all of us farther in life.

What is personal leadership? Personal leadership is having the strong desire and capacity to direct your life towards the direction you intend it to be. This doesn't merely rest on creating plans but more bringing these plans to life. Managing the self takes much courage and commitment in order to gain accomplishments. Proactively taking action to enrich oneself is one of the best ways to extend your leadership to a group or an organization. Personal leadership works on the premise that changes and success starts from within. Assuming full control and responsibility for your life and your future is what personal leadership is all about.

Why is it important? Personal leadership basically allows individuals to bring their lives on a better state. It greatly helps in creating, pursuing and reaching a clearer purpose for your life. Always remember that no one can run your life better than you.

Here are more reasons why learning how to manage yourself is essential:

  • Being able to manage yourself well can be great predictors of success on a personal level and in your career.
  • Developing self knowledge and wisdom are important components of personal growth.
  • Leadership on the individual level can also enhance your effectiveness and productivity in carrying out tasks.
  • Achievements, success and happiness in the long run are some of the fruits of proper self management.
  • Leading yourself well can make a role model and good example for other individuals
  • Have the courage to say “yes” to the life you want to leave
  • Start living a life of purpose
  • Gain the capacity to lead others in different forms of groups and organizations when you are able to lead yourself
Now that you know how personal leadership can change your life, start to truly L.I.V.E. today by following these tips:

Look at yourself thoroughly not only on the inside but your physical self as well. Learn to look after its welfare and further development. Personal leadership is not only about having great principles in life. It is about applying and adhering to these values. Do not expect respect from others when you don’t give it to yourself.

Initiate accountability for actions, words and thoughts. This is one of the best ways to show responsibility and maturity. Manage yourself not only when something wrong has already happened – the real challenge of personal leadership is in learning to discipline oneself.

Volume up your skills, goals and work ethics to continuously grow. Work on making yourself better day by day as you tackle and enhance the different areas of your life.

Escape the victim’s attitude. Thinking that life always live you with no choice is the opposite of accountability. Always know that even if you may not have a say on what happens, you have full control of how you will respond to any circumstances that comes your way. Your reaction will always make the difference.

Let us all be the leaders of our lives. Share this with your family and friends to get them started on the better path as well.

Back To School Blues: 4 Ways To Give Your Kids A Happy First Day In School

Summer may be over but parenting challenges are still on the rise. Making use of patio furniture covers can keep your furniture safe but who will save you from first day of school blues? Well, I’ve got a couple of practical tips for you. Here are 4 ways on how you can prepare your child well for preschool.

Ways To Give Your Kids A Happy First Day In School

Back to School Tip # 1 Start preparing ahead of time Going back to school is a different. Children need all the energy they need to perform tasks and be productive during lessons. To avoid difficulty in getting up on school days, it is best to rework your child’s body clock weeks before school starts. This way, your child will be able to adjust well by following his or her own phase. You may also want to go shopping for school supplies earlier to get your tyke positively psyched up for the school year.

Back to School Tip # 2 Be an early bird On the first of day of school, encourage your child to wake up early. Doing so will allow both of you to enjoy quality time before classes actually begin. Starting preparations early also gives you a lot of time to answer any problem that may arise such as feeling sick or tantrums.
Arrive at school early and walk around to help your child settle in the new environment. This adjustment time can play a big role in coping up with changes. Make sure to pack essentials like snacks, extra sets of clothes and a comfort just in case your tyke will need a little help in adjusting.

Back to School Tip # 3 Relax and put on a happy face The first day of school is a big day for not only for kids but for parents as well. Though our little ones can’t articulate well how they feel, sensing emotions around them is one of their strongest points so make sure plaster that smiley even if you are filled with worries for them. Show them that you are calm and confident so they can draw strength from you.

Back to School Tip # 4 Teach your child the basics Children could play all day long. This is one of the reasons why they most definitely love summer vacations. Aside from getting to play all day, parents like you surely had all the reasons to all your kids to stay as late as they want especially during trips. And boy do I know how difficult it is to get them to bed while their energy is still at its peak. But you can certainly put this excess energy into good use.

While they are they are still hyped up, engage them reading or drawing to give them a feel of the structured learning environment in preschools. Teaching your little ones a couple of emergency numbers and your home address are helpful as well.

5 Steps to Get to Career Nirvana

Steps to Get to Career Nirvana

Stuck in a career dead end? There is definitely a way out. Planning your career at any point you may be is one of the best ways to resolve your dilemma. Human resource books offer a lot of insight on this matter. But to make things easier for you, here are 5 tested ways to get your career right back on track and rolling.

1. Reflect on where you want to go. Setting on a journey without a roadmap can get you nowhere. Early on in your career, take the initiative to find out where you’re heading for the next 5 years or so. Having a clear picture of what you want to achieve is never easy. It is best to try out several career paths or options until you find one that you’re comfortable with. Once you find the one, continuously explore various niches within in the field to find a suitable specialty for you.

2. Think of concrete steps to get there. Plans remain wishes until they are written down concretely. Once you know your end goal, identify the means that you’ll need in order to get there. Does it require you take post-graduate studies? Will getting a professional certification help enhance your career? With these considerations brought to light, you can allocate your time and financial resources among many others. Remember that proper planning will always work to your advantage. Also, make it a habit to continuously learn new things whether it’s for your career or personal pleasure. Keeping things varied is a great way to brighten your outlook and enhance various aspects of your life.

3. Make it a yearly habit: Track your progress. I know for a fact that many people have difficulty in looking at bigger picture - because I am one of them. Often times, I can’t bring myself to make long term plans because impermanence is a reality. And I’ve learned two things about it; one, this fact of life should never be used as an excuse to make advances in life. And second, there are tons of ways to combat this mentality. My preferred method is creating milestones to take note of my progress. They can be set on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly basis depending on what will work for you.

4. Satisfy your current job before going to the next. Jumping on every seemingly beautiful work opportunity can do more harm than good in your career. Remember that both growth and learning are time-consuming endeavors. Quality results rarely happen overnight so hold on to your current job unless there is a dire need to leave. Learn and accomplish as much as you can while awaiting your ripening.

5. Network, network, network. Making it big is not solely about talent or what you know – more often than not, it’s who you know and how you work with them to help you get somewhere. Do not isolate yourself in one corner of the workforce. Make it a point to mingle with people in your field. Doing so will not only gain you friends but it will also get you update and more rooted in your chosen career.

The Procrastinator: How Time Management Can Help You to Start Living a Better Life Today

If human resource books could talk, they would probably ask you these questions:

time management

Do you want to…
  • Get more things done in less time?
  •  Leave a great impression by being punctual in your professional meetings
  • Have a consistent motivation to always do your best
  • Start achieving your goals today
  • Minimize the risk of uncertainty in your career or academic life
  • Reduce stress caused by deadlines that you just can’t seem to meet?
  • Accomplish tasks that are really important?
If these questions resonate with your deepest desires then you are most likely suffering from procrastination. And your problem clearly stems from the lack of ability to manage your time well.

The ability to manage one’s daily life sums up the concept of time management. This productivity principle is characterized by a person’s capacity to set goals, put in place an appropriate action plan and carries them through to accomplishment. Being able to set realistic expectations and to firmly say “no” to things or circumstances that are not top priority should be done with time management. It is also important to keep a vibrant perspective on both short-term and long-term time horizons to be able to fully synchronize the achievements of today to the success of tomorrow.

But how can you jump into this track after being derailed by years of procrastinating on every single thing?

Here are 5 simple adjustments that you can do to break the ice. Integrate these steps to the way you live to get the better life you deserve.

  1. Rest up and take care of your body. Time management is all about you. It’s all about your priorities, tasks, goals and dreams. Give these priorities the attention and energy they deserve from you by paying attention to yourself first. Remember that you are the prime mover of your plans.

  2. social networks

  3. Block distractions. Social networking sites, mobile phones and other unrelated tasks can compete really well with your attention if you allow them to. While working or performing an important task, turn them off until you’re finished with what you have to do. Allotting a specific time of your day to check your phone, email, update your FB status or post a tweet can work wonders. Just make sure to commit to these given times and don’t enjoy too much so you can get back to work.
  4. Do one task at a time. This is very much related to the second adjustment that I’m recommending. Sneaking through your social accounts while working or studying will certainly not produce the best results for you. That’s because instead of giving a task your 100% focus, doing two at a time only gives each one of them 50% attention. You can do the math from there.
  5. Take advantage of technology: automate when possible. Make use of the internet or other automated procedures like voicemails to organize your life. This will allow you to easier manage the various aspects of your life and blend them together seamlessly. Start paying your bills online, create an auto email responder and record a good voice mail message today to save your precious time.
  6. Learn to say noIf you don’t like it, don’t do it. It’s simple as that. Though it would need much practice to perfect, you can do it. You just have to commit to saying no to anything or anyone that don’t matter as much.
Are you ready to change your life? Let me know how time management worked for you by writing it down below. Comments, suggestions and stories are also very much welcome.

Becoming a Leader

Everybody loves a leader. At least that’s what human resource books nowadays say.

Becoming a Leader

Of course, everyone can’t get enough of winners as well. But leaders are just different. These gifted individuals are highly charismatic and are true visionaries. They always see the bigger picture and give high regard to their members in order to bring about the vision they’ve been dreaming of. Leaders are also risk-seekers and risk-takers. Despite difficulties and unfavorable circumstances, their passions ignite with their hunger to change the status quo.

Are you one of them? Human resource specialists love leaders too. In fact, they take time to identify which applicants or employees have potentials in order to develop and mold them into the future leaders of the company.

Here are practical tips on how to be a truly effective leader hailed in HR books. These simple steps will surely make you the apple of your boss’ eyes.

Even if you are at the top of the corporate food chain, this will work for you as well. Take advantage of these steps to be the apple of your stakeholders’ eyes. Achieve only the best your employees, business partners, suppliers and customers.

1. Make the commitment to be in charge

If you want to lead others, being able to lead yourself is a must. Follow through with your commitment to change or to be the best at what you do. More often than not, all you need is an open mind and enough courage to cross the bridge from where you are to where you want to be. Take charge of your life’s direction to prove that you can take charge of others as well.

2. Audit your capabilities – strengths, weaknesses and your skills

Waging a war without any weapon is a sure recipe for disaster. Make sure that you know what you are working with. This will help you maximize your secret weapons against any opponent that you may face while on the quest to achieve something better. Being aware of your weak points is one of the best ways to improve yourself.

3. Have a vision and create goals

After getting well acquainted with yourself, it is time to paint the bigger and clearer picture. Envision that winning moment you desire. Make it as vivid as possible so that you’ll be able to create concrete steps that will lead you to that precious moment.

4. Get up and get movin’

Turn your plans into reality by acting upon them. Follow the steps that you’ve identified to get from point A to point B. It may sound easy but doing so could be difficult. Maintaining a strong support system by surrounding yourself with like-minded and driven individuals can keep you from moving away from your vision. Make sure that your chosen companions will nudge you towards the right direction instead of pulling you towards the other end.

5. Continue to move forward

Whatever happens, just keep on pursuing your goals, vision and dreams. Always remember that giving up means trashing everything that you’ve been working so hard for. Think through your decision several times before calling it a wrap. Leaders never quit. If you want to be one, act like one.

Organizations are breeding grounds of leaders. Be it professional, public, academic or business groups, joining like-minded individuals to achieve a common goal is one of the best ways to sharpen skills in human relations and leadership which are very important in the highly competitive work environment that’s emerging today.

Steps to Nicely Terminate an Employee

Many human resource books preach that an organization is only as good as its weakest link. And this is definitely true for me.
Steps to Nicely Terminate an Employee

If a business is ambitious and has ideals up in the clouds, employees need to deliver what is expected of them to reach this lofty goal.

Firing employees is never an easy task. Business owners and employee relations specialists consult HR books when faced with this problem. Trying to serve both the interest of the organization and the individual who would be relieved from his or her job can make difficult questions pop up from every corner. But one great answer to this age old problem is firing people nicely. Here’s how:

1. Surprises are nice for special occasions – but not this one.

Seeing an employee perform poorly may arouse a range of emotions all at once. There are instances that anger may be felt because of the opportunity that’s being wasted. Not only the opportunity to grow and hone one's skills but also on the resources being wasted by the employee being singled out. Being disappointed is also another emotion that may arise. But don’t allow these blinding sentiments get the best of you because it will lead you a poor performance yourself.

At the first sign of an employee’s poor performance, give verbal or written reminders at once. Let him or her know that you are noticing a decline in job performance especially if it becomes consistent. Talking to the concerned party may show that you are concerned. Never fire someone without exhausting all efforts to understand and help the situation unless the employee has done a grave misconduct that needs immediate action.

2. K.I.S.S. then say goodbye

Taking this tip literally may not be the best idea when letting an employee go due to substandard performance. We are reminding you, however, to Keep It Short and Simple. What you have to K.I.S.S. is the meeting wherein you announce the termination. Keep your points short and direct so as not to prolong the agony. After you have said your piece, you may give the employee a chance to air his or her side for any thoughts on the matter. Once both parties are settled on the agenda, shake hands like good sportsmen do then say your goodbyes and part ways. If possible, leave the fountain of tears and fiery words for the TV series.

3. Honesty IS always the best policy

Many business owners and human resource professionals miss this point one time or another. Always remember that sugar coating the situation, especially the reason why the employee is not fired will not make the situation better – it will only make it worse. Being honest is very important to be able to send the right message. This will help the axed employee understand his or her shortcomings and hopefully use the insights for personal improvement. Placing the conversation in black and white will also help the company project an image that is firm and committed to attaining excellence.

Firing should never be more difficult than being fired. Keep yourself updated by actively learning breakthrough best practices. Get a hold of books and other resource materials that would help build upon your years of experience in the field

How to Be Happiest Unemployed Person on the Planet

Losing your job is the best thing that could ever happen to you. Celebrate your freedom from the work force and be a slob! That last few words surely didn’t sound stellar – but admit it, you could use some time away to figure out your life. Though it’s off the record or any human resource books, this is a great way to boost your career.

human resource books

Well, losing your source of income might seem as miserable as the Great Depression if you have student loans, mortgage and other bills to pay with little money left on your bank account. But think of all the free time that you’ll have. Not to mention the voluntary freedom from the office politics and you’re your rat hole cubicle that you’ve been secretly despising for some time now.

Online College Courses shared a hefty list of things anyone can do while off the job. They offered 100 on how to be productive while on a down time. And I must, they have a pretty good list out there. But I enjoy doing things differently. Thanks to their list, I’ve created my own step-by-step plan on how to be the happiest unemployed individual on the planet.

online college course

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Clean Up If you’ve been in that job for more than half a year, there’s certainly much to clean up before you leave. Start by cleaning all those scratch papers, emails and other forms of messages that are irrelevant now that you’re not connected with the company anymore. Then, start cleaning out your system. Yes – you got that right. Rid yourself of all the hate and negativity that you’ve been able to muster up in this unpleasant event. Clean up your act. Leave (or throw) anything that wouldn’t help you to move forward into a better state.

MUST TRY:
• Exercise to get in shape
• End your resentment by mediating and learn to think positively
• Clean or redecorate your home
• Stay involved in your industry by attending networking events
• Learn from your mistakes

2. Plan Ahead Though it may sound appealing, you can’t be unemployed forever. Money doesn’t grow on trees man, no matter how hard you wish for them to do so. Always remember that sooner or later you’ll have to end this extended vacation of yours and start earning a living. You have to be that responsible adult that you are and provide for yourself and your family. Earning a living doesn’t necessarily mean going back to a 9 to 5 job. You may opt to start your business, work as a freelance or offer your expertise as a consultant. No matter what you choose, make sure that you’ll be clear about it and take suitable measures to attain your newly set goals.

MUST TRY:
• Rethink and reestablish your personal and professional goals
• Learn new skills related to what you intend to do
• Pick up a new hobby or study a new language
• Increase your value as an employee by attending courses, getting certifications or going back to school for a post graduate degree
• Make plans for your retirement

3. Take Risks You’ve figured out what to do huh? So why are you still lounging on your couch? Take that leap of faith and start reaching your dreams. I know it’s easier said than done but you have to take the first step. What do you have to lose – you’ve already lost your job right? But kidding aside, don’t be afraid to try out things that are new to you. Now is the time.

MUST TRY:
• Volunteer for a charity or promote a cause that you believe in
• Put up your own business
• Start on a different career
• Go out and meet new people to maintain a social life
• Face your fears and change bad habits

Being unemployed is not that miserable. After all, this could be that one opportunity that you’ve been waiting for that could turn your life around. Embrace the uncertainty and change for the better to move your career and life forward.

Be a Manager Today to Lose Your Job Tomorrow

managers

Managers will soon be the workplace dinosaurs. Not that they’re morphing into creatures with tails and sharp claws, but they’d pretty much suffer the same fate in the near future. Managers are well on their way to becoming extinct members of the work force.

Age old human resource books, as well as those written in our current times will surely tear themselves to pieces if they’ve got hands. This thought may be somewhat unimaginable for many. Just let them be. This phenomenon is happening now and it’ll our reality sooner than you can spell Mississippi correctly – backwards.

It’ll be my pleasure to walk you through this employment diaspora. Let’s take the first step by scrolling down a little further.

Are you in the brink of extinction?

Managers are one of a kind creature. These people are hired by business owners to get things done and more often than not, they’re really good at doing so. They usually rise from the ranks by working hard. The subordinates that they rule over are usually their co-workers before they were propelled to the prestigious position of being a manager. According to Kristina Rickettes’ paper for the University of Kentucky entitled Leadership vs. Management, responsibilities of managers are more task-oriented. With that, they are expected to have a bevy of skills including technical, human and conceptual to perform their roles well.

Kristina Rickettes

A Wall Street Journal article identifies the primary tasks of managers and these are: setting objectives, organizing, motivating and communication, measuring and developing people.

Does this describe your current job? Read the rest of the article to know how to save yourself.

Why?

Don’t cry in desperation just yet. This situation may not be irreversible but you can do something. It’s only the managers that’ll be extinct – not you.

The workplace has under gone many changes over the years. Now, are not only allowed to work but they can already hold high positions in both public and private organizations. It’s a big leap from just boxing in women as housewives decades before. The internet has also changed the employment landscape. Today, work at home opportunities and outsourcing platforms are rampant. Are these the factors pushing for the extinction of managers? Well, not quite. The attitudes and perspective that they bring with them are the true changers of the workplace arena. Managers will be extinct because of the paradigm change taking place in the workplace. Leaders are taking over management roles.

Save me, maybe?

Definitely! Being spared from the big shift is truly possible. It may not be easy but it’s surely worth a try. Upgrading your leadership skills is the way to go. Here are the differences between a leader and a manger to get you a head start on the big change.

Warren Bennis

I’ll take Warren Bennis’ differentiation of leaders and managers as published in his book On Becoming a Leader. It was in 1989 but still very much relevant as Wall Street Journal quotes it in another article.

1.The manager administers; the leader innovates

2.The manager is a copy; the leader is an original

3.The manager maintains; the leader develops

4.The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people

5.The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust

These are some of the differences between a leader and a manager. Don’t get left behind to lose your job – join the bandwagon of leader-managers. I’ll show you how in my next post.

Make a Team Out of You

team

Working in groups is unavoidable. Be it in school or in the work place, teams are generally formed to hasten the achievement of common goals. Though it may seem like a second nature to anyone, there is actually a science in thriving in groups. Human resource books are great resources to know more about groups and teams.

Today, I’m sharing with you 4 characteristics common to the most valuable team players. Help build any team by having these traits:

1. Thinking member

The strength of a team rests on the individual capabilities of members. When these competencies are pulled together, the results are surely greater than what members can achieve on their own. Be an asset of the team by bringing valuable attitudes and skills to the group. Though any technical know-how is a valuable contribution, it may turn out to be a frustrating disadvantage if not used well for the achievement of group goals.

Always be aware of yourself and the environment within the group to be able to respond accordingly at all times. Remember that being in a group means bringing in your personal expertise to help achieve common goals.

2. Exceptional

Showing reliability, sincere commitment and flexibility all at once may not seem easy. Being an exceptional member is in fact a difficult task. Individuals who are able to demonstrate the said traits at the same time really work hard. But I say you can achieve the same results by working smart.

To be a stellar team player, you may follow this exercise. Take reliability, commitment and flexibility as separate traits that you have to demonstrate. Write these words down on a clean sheet of paper allowing them their own column. Afterwards, think of the circumstances within in the group and write down concrete ways on how you can best demonstrate them.

3.Active

Do you recognize something different with your high performing team mate? In reality, he or she is truly different. Valuable team members are hyper in several ways. They take on a proactive perspective and support the dynamic development of the group. Doing so allows them to thrive and be a cut above the rest when placed in a group set-up.

In a group, before letting your voice be heard, it is always wise to listen first. Collaborating with others is basically a give and take relationship.

4.Maintain an Openness

Groups are always composed of individuals who are working together to achieve a common goal. In this sense, joining a group entails one to leave his or her comfort zones in order to be a significant part of a whole. Being receptive to new ideas, processes and personalities is important to allow members of the group to work in harmony.

Ready to be a better team player? Share these tips with your family, friends and colleagues to help other groups become better. Let me know of your experiences in groups by leaving a comment below.
